The Work

Lake Erie driftwood, cut and cured, burned by hand, finished in beeswax from our own hives. Hemp lace comes from a provider here in town.

  Driftwood pendant on hemp lace

  A full necklace: pendant plus buckled hemp lace, adjustable. The wood came off a Lake Erie beach after a storm. Nothing here is stained or inked — that colour is heat.

Elder Futhark and other old marks, burned into driftwood discs. The meanings are stated plainly on the card that comes with the piece — no invented lore.

  Algiz protection rune pendant

  Algiz: elk-sedge. Protection, defence, the raised hand. It was also taken up by the Nazi party as the so-called 'Lebensrune' — that happened, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. What is burned here is the Elder Futhark letter and its older meaning: something that guards.

  Elder Futhark single-rune disc

  Pick a letter — Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo. Burned across the growth rings, so the ring lines cut through the stave. That is on purpose.

  Spalt-line etheric piece

  These start with a black spalt line already in the wood — fungus, from years in the water. I burn around it. On this one the line forked and I let it be a river.
