How this started

Fire, then wood.

Ink drawing of Monkey Mike gathering Lake Erie driftwood

Fire poi. Staff. Years of spinning.
Nothing left but a memory.

Monkey Mike wanted a mark that stayed. A hot tip. A piece of wood. Here we are.

The lake makes the material.
The tree makes the pattern.
The fire makes the mark.
The maker makes the choice.
Then it becomes yours.

The question people ask at the booth

Nature made the design. I'm just complimenting it.

Ink drawing of a heated nib burning a mark into driftwood beside beeswax

Grain: the tree.
Spalt lines: fungus.
The burned mark: me.

Nothing is stained or inked. That color is heat.
A burned line sits below the surface. Feel it.
