It started with fire spinning

Fire poi and fire staff came first. Spinning fire is a discipline you practise for years and, at the end of an evening, have nothing to show for except the memory and the smell of paraffin. Monkey Mike went looking for a hobby adjacent to it — still about heat and flame, still done by hand — that made something positive out of it. Something that existed the next morning.

Pyrography answered that exactly. A hot tip, a piece of wood, and a mark that stays. Art assembled from nature, 100% organic materials, made by hand. No pigment, no plastic, no resin. The colour is the wood cooking, and the finish is wax from bees on the family farm.

Why it stuck

Plenty of crafts are satisfying and go nowhere. This one works as art and as a business, which matters if you want to keep doing it. The material cost of a pendant is a beach walk and a little wax. The skill is real but learnable. The format is small enough to carry to a market in a crate and priced where somebody can say yes without a conversation with their partner.

Three festivals in, the pattern is clear: people stop for the wood, then stay for the question. They pick up a pendant, turn it to the light, and ask how long the shading took. Half the time the answer is that the shading is the tree. Nature made the design. I'm just complimenting it.

Teaching is the point, not a sideline

Because it is a simple format, it can be taught — and something that can be taught can be shared. That is why there is a workshop stool at the booth rather than only a table of finished pieces. Thirty minutes, forty-nine dollars, no experience needed. That last part is rather the point: the first line a beginner burns wobbles, and a wobbly line is proof a human hand was there.

You make two necklaces. You keep one and leave one for the shop, and when yours sells you get 11% commission. It means the person who walked up curious walks away as a maker with a stake in the table.

What gets made, and what does not

Pendants, rune discs, car-mirror emblems, sage sets, signs, wall pieces. Custom requests are welcome — bring a shape, and you will get an honest answer about whether it is too fine to burn at that size. Custom requests involving hate speech, offensive imagery or otherwise inappropriate content are declined.

Nothing here is stained or inked. That colour is heat.
