What is pyrography?

Drawing with heat instead of pigment. No stain, no ink — the colour is the wood cooking.

Pyrography is the practice of marking wood with a heated tip. A pen-shaped tool holds a nib — a wire loop, a shading spoon, a fine point — and a transformer pushes current through it until it glows. Touch that to a prepared surface and the wood scorches under the tip. Move the tip and you get a line. That is the whole mechanism. There is nothing added to the wood: no dye, no stain, no ink, no paint. Nothing here is stained or inked. That colour is heat.

The tan-to-black range comes from pyrolysis, which is a long word for what happens when organic material is heated without enough oxygen to actually catch fire. Sugars and lignin in the cell walls break down and darken. Light contact for a short time gives a pale caramel; more heat, or a slower pass, drives it toward chocolate and then to true black. That is why a burn cannot be undone: you are not sitting a colour on top of the fibre, you are changing the fibre.

Why the line looks different from a printed one

A burned line has a lip. The heat drives moisture out of the cells around the tip, so the edges of the stroke swell very slightly and the trough sinks. Run a fingertip across a burned pendant and you can feel the drawing. Print, transfer and laser-etch all lie flatter. That texture is also why burned work photographs badly in flat light and beautifully in raking light — the shadow in the trough is doing half the work.

It also means every stroke carries the hand that made it. The tip cools slightly on contact and reheats as you move; press harder and the mark widens; hesitate and a dark node forms where you paused. A wobbly line is proof a human hand was there. Machines produce a consistent line because they do not hesitate. I do.

The wood decides more than you would think

Soft, even-grained wood takes a smooth line. Anything with hard-and-soft banding — pine, most conifers — burns unevenly, because the dense latewood resists the tip and the soft earlywood gives way and goes dark fast. Drive a straight stroke across that and it comes out striped whether you wanted stripes or not. Driftwood adds another variable: years in the water leave it low in sap, sometimes spalted with dark fungal lines, sometimes soft in patches where it sat wet against a stone.

Working that way changes the order of operations. Rather than deciding on a design and forcing it onto whatever board is nearest, I read the piece first and put the design where the wood will cooperate. Often the grain, a knot or a spalt line already made the shape and the burning is answering it. Nature made the design. I'm just complimenting it.

What it is good for, and what it is not

  • Good: line work, hatching, silhouettes, lettering above about 8mm, texture, anything where a slightly raised black stroke is an asset.
  • Fighting it: photographic gradients, very fine detail on a small pendant, thin serifs, anything you would want to erase.
  • Impossible: undoing a stroke. You either build around it or sand the surface off and start again.

It is a simple format, and that is the reason it can be taught in half an hour at a market booth. Two nibs, one piece of prepared driftwood, some hemp lace, and someone who has never held the tool walks away with a pendant they made. There is no secret step being withheld. The skill is in reading the wood and in knowing when to stop.
