## Lake Erie Driftwood Art, Made by Hand, in Cleveland Ohio, USA.

I'm Monkey Mike, a Cleveland, Ohio artist who walks the Lake Erie shoreline looking for driftwood with a story already written in the grain.

I bring those found pieces back to the bench, read the knots, curves, scars, and spalt lines, then burn original designs into the wood by hand. 

Each piece is shaped by the material itself. 
No two grains are alike, and no two finished pieces are exactly the same.

Finished with beeswax from my family's farm, these are natural wood pendants, necklaces, signs, and one-of-a-kind works of art made in Northeast Ohio.

The Wood comes first. 
Intention comes second.

### Follow the walks.

The Lake Makes the Material. The Storm Moves It.

I walk the Lake Erie shoreline around Cleveland and Northeast Ohio, usually timing beachcombing trips to the weather. Some days, the beach gives up nothing. After a good blow, the shoreline can tell a different story.

I'm looking for driftwood with character: sound pieces, interesting grain, knots, curves, and natural markings worth keeping. Living wood stays where it belongs. Treated lumber and punky, crumbling pieces stay out of the workshop.

The finds come home, dry out for weeks, and eventually make their way to the bench. That's where the grain starts telling me what the piece wants to become.

You get a driftwood blank, a hot pen, and a bench next to Monkey Mike. You draw the thing, you burn the thing, you carry it home the same day. The blanks are Lake Erie driftwood, foraged off the shore and timed to storms and tides — so the piece you take home already has a shape nobody designed. Most people spend the first ten minutes trying to burn straight lines and the rest of the session working out that the wobble is the good part. No experience needed. You will smell like a campfire afterward. That is normal. What you should know Seats are limited by bench space — when a session is full, it is full. 10 workshop hours available per week — book early, seats go fast. Hot tools and open flame. You follow the safety briefing, and anyone under 18 comes with an adult. Refundable up to 48 hours before the session. Inside 48 hours the seat moves to another person or another date, but the blank and the bench are already committed. Session dates are confirmed by email after booking.

Tell me what you want burned. A pet, a logo, a line out of a song, the thing you keep doodling in the margins of meeting notes. How it works The deposit books bench time and pays for the driftwood. It comes off the final price. I find a blank whose grain suits the idea. Often the knot or the spalt line decides the composition, and the burning is answering it. You get a proof before anything is burned. You approve the proof, then I burn it. Driftwood has no undo — once it is approved, the piece is final. Two to four weeks, including proof approval. Longer in festival season, and I will say so up front rather than let a date slide. Sealed with beeswax from our own hives. I will not reproduce someone else's copyrighted or trademarked artwork. If a brief needs that, I will tell you and refund the deposit.

I look for those details before I ever pick up a woodburning tool. The shape comes first. The grain comes first. Then the design begins to reveal itself. With a hot tip, a steady hand, and a little imagination, I bring out the personality already hiding in the material.
The result is a wearable piece of natural history, transformed by fire into something personal. No two pieces of driftwood weather in exactly the same way, and no two pendants carry precisely the same character. Your necklace isn't a reproduction of a design stamped out a thousand times. It's an individual piece of wood, interpreted by hand, with its own natural lines, markings, and story.

Lake Erie has a way of turning ordinary wood into something worth stopping for. Water works against the grain, weather softens the edges, and time leaves its fingerprints in curves, cracks, and patterns no machine could convincingly reproduce. A piece washes ashore looking like nothing special to someone in a hurry. To someone paying attention, it might be the beginning of something entirely different.

I collect driftwood with an eye for character, not perfection. I'm looking for the piece that has a shape worth following, grain worth preserving, or an unexpected little feature that makes me stop and turn it over in my hand. Some pieces suggest a creature. Others have a silhouette that feels almost deliberate. Sometimes I know what I'm looking at immediately. Sometimes the wood has to sit on the bench for a while before it tells me what it wants to become.

My relationship with fire started before pyrography. Fire spinning taught me to respect the tool, understand movement, and pay attention to the relationship between control and letting go. When I began working with a hot tip on wood, that same principle followed me to the bench. Fire can make a permanent mark in an instant, but good work isn't about rushing toward the mark. It's about knowing when to move, when to pause, and when the material is already doing more than enough.

A driftwood pendant is a small canvas, but that doesn't mean the wood should disappear beneath the design. I work with the grain rather than against it. I look for the natural silhouette, the way the light catches the surface, and the details that give the piece its own identity. The burning is there to bring those qualities forward, not bury them beneath decoration. Sometimes a few strong lines do more than a hundred tiny details ever could.

That's the idea behind Doodle Wood: the wood comes first, the fire comes second, and the human hand connects the two. I don't want every pendant to look identical. I want every pendant to feel like the particular piece of nature it came from. The goal isn't factory-level uniformity. It's a finished piece that feels right in your hand, sits comfortably within its own shape, and carries the evidence of how it was made.

When you wear a piece of Lake Erie driftwood, you're carrying more than a wooden ornament. You're carrying a material shaped by a real place, a real shoreline, and forces that worked on it long before it reached my bench. The wood has already lived a life. My part is simply to add another chapter.

## Story — one paragraph per line

I've always thought the world could use a few more things that make people stop, look twice, and smile. Not everything needs to be serious. Not everything needs to be polished until every trace of the human hand disappears. Sometimes the best idea is the one that makes you laugh a little, tilt your head, and wonder why something so simple has so much personality.

That's the spirit behind the NUT Pendant. The name is part of the fun, but the idea goes a little deeper. I like taking familiar shapes, natural materials, and overlooked details and giving them another chance to be seen. The world is full of things people walk past without noticing. Look closely enough, and the ordinary starts getting interesting.

Doodle Wood grew out of my relationship with natural materials and fire. Before I started burning designs into wood, I spent time working with fire through spinning. That experience taught me to respect the tool, understand movement, and appreciate the balance between intention and spontaneity. When I brought that relationship to the workbench, pyrography became another way to explore the same idea: use a simple tool, pay attention, and let the material help determine what happens next.

The NUT Pendant takes that philosophy into a smaller, more playful space. Wearable art doesn't have to be elaborate to have character. It doesn't need a complicated backstory or a thousand decorative details. Sometimes a memorable name, a distinctive design, and a little human imagination are enough to make an object feel alive. The fun is in the details, the personality, and the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously.

First Edition is the beginning of this particular story. Every design has a first appearance, a moment when an idea moves from someone's imagination into the physical world. This release marks that starting point for the NUT Pendant. It's an opportunity to own a piece from the opening chapter rather than discover the design only after it has been around for years.

I like the idea of an object that can mean different things to different people. Maybe you see a little woodland humor in it. Maybe you like the oddball name. Maybe you're drawn to the handmade quality or the idea of wearing something that wasn't designed to appeal to absolutely everybody. That's the beauty of making things with character: the connection doesn't have to be universal to be real.

There is something satisfying about carrying a small reminder not to overcomplicate everything. We spend plenty of time trying to look polished, fit into categories, and make every decision look perfectly sensible. Then a little pendant called NUT comes along and reminds us that being a little unusual isn't a problem that needs fixing. Sometimes it's the whole point.

At the bench, the principle stays the same. I don't want to remove every trace of individuality in pursuit of perfect uniformity. I want the work to feel considered, handmade, and human. The tools matter, the material matters, and the finished piece matters, but so does the sense of humor that makes the process enjoyable in the first place.

The NUT Pendant — First Edition is a small expression of that larger philosophy. It brings together playful design, the value of handmade work, and the pleasure of owning something with its own identity. It's for the collectors, the curious, the nature-minded, and the people who understand that a good object doesn't need to be enormous or expensive to leave an impression.

So here's to the little things with big personalities.
